Even surface wear can support an object's age and use; concentrated damage around joints, feet, hinges or load-bearing rails may need closer inspection.
Patina is a description of accumulated surface change, not permission to omit cracks, loose joints, corrosion or losses.
Name restoration precisely
A replaced cane seat, refinished top and structurally repaired joint are different interventions. Ask what was changed, when it was done if known, and whether the work is visible or reversible.
Restoration is not automatically negative. Hidden or vaguely described restoration is the larger problem because it prevents an informed decision.
