Choose what connects them
Think of the bed as the centre of the composition. The tables sit on either side of that centre, but they need not mirror each other. A wide teak drawer cabinet and a narrow dark wooden table can work because a repeated lamp or a similar top level gives your eye something to follow.
Make one relationship obvious. You might keep the timber tones close while changing shape, or choose deliberately different woods and repeat the lamp shape. If almost everything is nearly the same but slightly off, the pair can look like an unsuccessful attempt to match. A clear difference is often easier to enjoy.
These are design exercises, not fixed rules. Judge them from the doorway and from the bed itself. The first view tells you about the room; the second tells you whether you can reach a glass, operate the light and get out comfortably.
Three ways to make separate finds feel deliberate
| Pair | The connecting choice |
|---|---|
| Teak chest + dark open table | Similar usable top levels and a pair of quiet cream lamps. |
| Two wooden cabinets of different periods | Related warm tones; repeat one small colour elsewhere in the bedding. |
| A broad chest + a slim table in a tight corner | Balance the larger piece with a visually lighter lamp and keep the small side usable. |
In the first arrangement, the chest handles storage while the open table leaves more floor visible. The lamps repeat a shape above two different bodies. You gain a composed room without asking both people to keep the same belongings beside the bed.
In the second, avoid trying to make the woods identical with polish or stain. Bring them into the same light before deciding whether their tones relate. A finish treatment is a separate furniture-care decision, not a colour correction to make two online photographs agree.
For the third, prioritise the constrained side. If a door or radiator leaves room only for a narrow table, let the other side use a chest. The room’s architecture already supplies a reason for the asymmetry.
Match the useful surface, not the catalogue height

A raised gallery can make a cabinet seem taller without raising the surface where the water glass sits. Measure from the floor to the working top on both candidates and compare that with the assembled mattress, including its topper. Then try the reach from your usual sleeping and reading positions.
Suppose the mattress is 60 cm high and two proposed working tops are 58 and 61 cm. That difference may be easy for the users to accommodate. If the apparent 61 cm includes a 9 cm gallery, however, the useful top is 52 cm. These are illustrative numbers: comfort depends on the actual person and arrangement, not a universal permitted height difference.
For the complete reach and opening checks, use choosing a vintage bedside table.
Use the lamps to connect the pair, not to disguise a bad fit
Two similar lamps create a repeated shape without altering the furniture. On tables of different heights, different lamp heights can bring the shades closer to a shared level. Try the light while sitting up in bed: a pleasing line across the room is no benefit if one bulb shines into your eyes.
Include the complete shade diameter in your plan. A narrow table may hold the base but leave the shade overhanging the pillow or touching a wall. Check access to the switch and route the cable so it is not pulled when drawers open or someone gets up.
Leave room for the actual daily objects. A lamp, charging phone, book and glass can occupy a small top very quickly. An open shelf may suit books; a drawer may suit items you want out of sight. Different storage is a reason to buy two different pieces.
Make the room do the matching
Before changing the furniture, try a quieter duvet, a repeated shade colour or fewer objects on the tops. A substantial wooden headboard already adds another timber surface; plain bedding gives the separate furniture forms room to read.
CCI cautions that water and unsuitable care products can affect furniture finishes. Use protection appropriate to each top rather than assuming both can take the same wet cleaning or a glass without a coaster.[1]
The pair is finished when it looks deliberate and both sides work. You do not have to keep searching until a second identical cabinet appears. Sometimes the nicer bedroom is the one assembled from two things you liked for different reasons.
