Picture the chair occupied

An Egg can form a small private corner within a larger room. A Swan leaves more of the room visible around a seated person. These are useful differences when you place a chair beside a window or opposite a sofa, but high-backed does not automatically mean perfect head support for your height.

Take the book you normally read and wear the shoes you usually wear indoors. If the chair is sound enough for a trial, sit long enough to notice where the front edge meets your legs and where your shoulders land. Turn towards an imaginary companion. Then stand without using nearby furniture as a prop. A beautiful chair that only works when you hold yourself in a photograph-ready position will get surprisingly little use.

What happens when you turn?Allow for the complete rotating shell, including behind it.Allow for the spreading arms as the seat turns.
Will a side table remain reachable?Try reaching from the reclined position you will use.Check reach without leaning across the wing of the seat.

Ask for the movement this example actually has

Do not import every adjustment advertised for one model into the other. Establish the exact chair and mechanism, then ask the seller to demonstrate its normal movement. For an Egg with tilt adjustment, check that the relevant control and positions are explained. For a Swan, establish its actual swivel arrangement rather than treating the absence of an Egg-style control as a fault.

Watch whether the base remains planted and the chair settles predictably. Grinding, an unexpected drop, a loose shell or an improvised fastener calls for assessment before a prolonged trial. Ordinary wear on the base is a different issue from movement between components that should be secure.

A fresh cover can hide an uncomfortable shape

Top-down room sketch of a chair inside its turning envelope and a nearby side table.
Use the actual chair’s widest rotating outline when planning a side table or wall clearance. The circle illustrates the task; it is not an Egg or Swan factory measurement.

Look at the seat and back from the side before sitting. Very flattened padding, uneven shoulders or a strangely bulky outline deserve a conversation about earlier work. They do not prove an inauthentic chair, but they may explain why a familiar shape feels wrong.

Ask an upholsterer with experience of the model to separate retaining the existing padding from rebuilding it. Fabric and leather also require different handling and detailing. “Newly upholstered” is only the beginning of the description: ask what was renewed beneath it, what was retained and whether the mechanical parts were inspected while access was easier.

The production period can affect parts support

Fritz Hansen’s ReNew repair information says essential components are available for Egg and Swan chairs from 1975 onwards. That is a useful service lead, not a promise that every part of every later chair is in stock, or that an earlier chair cannot be repaired. Send the particular chair’s photographs and identification details before budgeting a replacement.[1]

This can reverse an apparent bargain. In a hypothetical comparison, a later chair with an identified base part and a firm repair quote may be easier to bring home than an earlier chair with an unexplained wobble. The earlier object may still be attractive to a collector, but a daily reading chair has a different brief.

Message to adapt

Could you show the complete chair, base and identification marks, and demonstrate its normal swivel or tilt? Please describe any mechanical repairs and what was replaced during upholstery work. I would like to try the chair for reading and confirm the cost of any outstanding parts before deciding.

Buy the example whose sitting position you enjoy and whose next repair you understand. A well-kept older cover that fits its padding can be a better companion than impressive new leather over a chair that no longer feels right.
