Choose by the work beneath the shade
Artemide’s documented family includes different sizes and mounting arrangements. As one concrete reference, the current Tolomeo Mini body page gives a maximum extension of 102 cm and describes the body plus accessories as the complete fitting. That does not mean every older lamp called Mini has every accessory, nor that the stated reach is useful from every mounting position.[1]
Put a marker where the support can stand or clamp, then measure to the notebook, keyboard or drawing area you want lit. Include the space above and behind the desk. A shelf can obstruct the elbow of the lamp long before you reach its maximum extension.
If the smaller version covers your work with room to adjust, a larger one may offer little benefit. If you need to light a broad drawing surface, check the appropriate larger model rather than expecting a compact lamp to stretch beyond its normal range. Compare exact product drawings once the seller has identified the lamp.
For the design’s story, read Tolomeo: the desk lamp with a visible balancing act in the Furniture Library.
“Body only” is a meaningful description
Ask for everything included in the sale laid out or shown clearly. A weighted table base, clamp and fixed support are different accessories. They need the correct connection for the identified body; a ring or adapter absent from a listing can make a handsome lamp impossible to install as intended.
| Support | Measure or confirm |
|---|---|
| Weighted base | Base footprint, complete connection and space left for your work. |
| Clamp | Desk thickness, edge shape, underside apron and the correct adapter. |
| Fixed support | Suitable desk construction and the manufacturer’s intended installation. |
| Body without support | Exact compatible accessories, availability and the completed price. |
A clamp can save surface space, but a deep apron, shallow overhang or drawer may leave nowhere for it to grip. Show both the top and underside of your desk to the supplier. Do not drill an older desk simply because the lamp body arrived without a base.
Watch the head while the whole lamp moves
Artemide’s catalogue describes the family’s spring-and-cable balancing arrangement. Ask the owner to show the arms moving through ordinary working positions, then leaving the head where it is placed. Keep the demonstration within the normal instructions; do not force joints or compensate for drift with makeshift weights.[2]
Look for damaged cables, distorted arms, missing components and a shade that will not stay directed at the work. Record the symptom rather than assuming a particular spring or screw is the culprit. A compatible replacement part and the labour to fit it should be confirmed before you count the lamp as serviceable.
Then separate that mechanical result from the electrical one. Identify the light-source version, market specification and any previous repairs. An older bulb-based example and an LED version can require different service parts; “Tolomeo” alone is not an electrical specification.
Compare the total installed lamp
Imagine two listings for the same identified body: one has its correct weighted base; the other is cheaper but came from a desk with a fixed support that is staying behind. The second listing is not yet a complete alternative. Add the confirmed accessory, delivery and any assembly or service work before comparing prices.
At home, route the cable so ordinary arm movement does not pull it tight or drag it across your work. Have an older lamp’s electrical readiness assessed where needed before use. Once installed correctly, try the light with the screen on and the room as you normally use it, watching for reflections rather than simply aiming at the middle of the desk.
Message to adapt
Please identify the size and light-source version and show the body, support and connecting parts included. Can you demonstrate the arms holding normal positions and describe any repairs? Here are my desk edge and underside measurements; I need confirmation that the proposed mounting is complete and suitable.
The right Tolomeo should feel easy to place and easy to forget while you work. Choosing its size and support carefully does more for that experience than buying the longest arm in the listing results.
