Three small pieces worth putting on the same shortlist

Hey Jude Workshop describes a compact Schreiber with three drawers, a cupboard and mustard-coloured plastic handles. Its dimensions are 92 × 39.5 × 74 cm, and the seller calls the surface laminate veneer. Ask what that wording means on the actual top and edges before planning any sanding.[1]

Three scaled rectangular fronts compare the recorded Schreiber, Meredew and Lebus widths and heights.
Outside proportions of the three seller-recorded examples, shown schematically. Drawer lines do not identify a model; measure each usable interior separately.

Andevost records a Meredew four-drawer chest at 76 × 45.5 × 83 cm, described as oak and refinished with hardwax oil. The listing discloses a small repaired area of delamination. The Old Cinema records a Lebus three-drawer chest at 77.5 × 43 × 76 cm, with oak veneers, solid details and a surviving label. These are seller descriptions of individual objects, not factory specifications.[2]

The Lebus is only 1.5 cm wider than the Meredew, yet the drawer arrangement and overall height differ. Put your belongings into an imagined drawer before deciding that one is the better bargain.[3]

What would you actually be restoring?

Request an edge, an open drawer, the underside and the back. A convincing timber pattern on the front does not identify the top’s surface. If the seller uses laminate, veneer and solid wood interchangeably, ask them to describe each component separately.

Wood-effect laminate can be a useful everyday surface when it is sound and you like its appearance. Buying it with a plan to reveal beautiful wood underneath is a different proposition. Likewise, a veneered chest is not disqualified by its construction, but a missing patch cannot be repaired by simply sanding deeper.

Read a refinished listing as a description of the present piece. In the Meredew example, the new oil finish and disclosed repair are part of what is offered. Ask whether adjacent colour differences remain visible in ordinary daylight. A clear account of work is more useful than a perfectly smooth front photograph.

Try the drawer you will open every morning

Take the dimensions of a stack of jumpers, your plates or a document folder. Check usable internal depth, drawer opening and whether a tall object can pass beneath the shelf. A cabinet that holds your things without rearranging them every day earns its place quickly.

Open each drawer normally and look for sagging bottoms, damaged runners and handles moving at their fixings. Check the case on a suitable level surface. Record any binding rather than forcing it open and deciding the whole maker was poor quality.

Small original handles can be difficult to match even when the cabinet itself was inexpensive. For a missing one, compare the cost and appearance of a confirmed replacement with living with a deliberate matching set of later handles. Keep the original fittings and disclose changes if you later sell.

Compare ready-to-use pieces

Add delivery and confirmed repairs to each asking price. Sold labels on archived shop pages do not reveal the final amount paid, and prices for a restored retail chest are not directly comparable with collection-only furniture needing work.

Ask the seller

Please describe the material of the top and drawer fronts separately, show the label in context and all drawers open, and list repairs or replaced fittings. I need an internal space of ___ × ___ cm for ___.

Keep the brand as a useful search term. Let the cabinet’s proportions, interior and honest condition report make the purchase decision. A modest British chest can be exactly the right piece without needing a more fashionable identity.
