Make the description concrete

Ask for dimensions, the full object, underside or back, known repairs and included parts. A listing for “six chairs” needs six identifiable chairs in the record. Confirm whether the price is for the set or each piece, and whether cushions, leaves, shelves or keys are included.

Check whether you are dealing with a private seller or a trader. The platform does not make that distinction irrelevant: EU consumer protections depend in part on the contracting seller’s status. Keep the account, agreed description and any invoice details together.[3]

Use the conversation to resolve one important uncertainty before travelling. If the table must fit a narrow stair, get the assembled dimensions and any legitimate disassembly information first. An attractive price is not compensation for a trip to an object you cannot collect.

Agree the sequence before arriving

For a viewing-dependent purchase, make it clear that you will decide after seeing the item. Arrange a time when you can inspect in decent light without rushing the seller. Bring a tape measure and the important room dimensions. Confirm parking, floor, stairs and whether help with lifting is available.

Look at the whole piece, the working parts and the locations that carry load. Do not dismantle, force or stress-test it. If something differs from the listing, describe the difference and either agree a revised purchase or leave. A van waiting outside should not make the decision for you.

Once you accept, record the item, amount and included components. A brief receipt or clear in-platform agreement is useful even for an ordinary private sale. Keep personal documents private; the goal is a usable transaction record.

Collection and protected shipping are different arrangements

Local collection: View → agree → verify payment → collect. Eligible platform shipping: Check protection and service in the order. On arrival: Inspect and use the formal problem route.
A payment request and buyer protection are different parts of a transaction. Check whether the actual delivery arrangement is covered.

Marktplaats’ payment guidance directs users to payment requests in Berichten. Its buyer-protection help describes eligible Verzending via Marktplaats, including supported carriers and category exceptions. The published collection terms state that Kopersbescherming does not apply to “Ophalen”. Confirm what the actual transaction shows before paying.[2][1]

Do not use a payment or identity-verification link sent by the other person merely because it resembles a platform page. Open the app or site yourself and find the conversation and request there. A message asking for a tiny transfer to “verify” your account is a reason to stop and check through the platform’s own help.

Never treat a screenshot as the payment record. Check status in the relevant account yourself. For a purchase you have agreed to inspect first, do not switch to an unexplained advance transfer simply because the seller says another buyer is waiting.

Know the inspection clock before it starts

The Marktplaats buyer-protection page checked on 10 September 2026 describes a 48-hour inspection period after delivery for the covered flow. Read the current transaction instructions, exclusions and problem-reporting route. If an item arrives damaged or materially different, report it promptly through that route; messaging alone may not open the required case.[1]

For bulky furniture, establish who packs, which service is booked and whether delivery reaches the room. A carrier being available through the platform does not tell you that every size, access situation or independently arranged booking has identical cover. Keep the selected service and accepted terms with the order.

Make a local purchase easy to complete

Message to the seller

I would like to view [exact item/set] at [time], with the purchase subject to the agreed inspection. Please confirm [dimensions, parts, known repairs], the total price and the collection access. If we use delivery instead, please send the arrangement through the platform so I can check the service, protection, costs and reporting terms before paying.

A good local transaction can be pleasantly ordinary: the furniture is as described, it fits the route, the payment is verified and both people know what has been agreed. Put those details in place before the excitement of collection.
