Sort out the visit before committing to the sideboard

Ask about the complete dimensions, condition, included shelves or keys and the collection location. Confirm stairs, parking, access and whether the seller can make the furniture available for inspection. A collection-only listing does not mean the seller has agreed to dismantle, pack or help carry it.

If seeing it first is essential, request a viewing before you commit. Do not assume a completed purchase becomes a free reservation because collection happens later. Save the listing and important messages so the condition you agreed remains clear.

eBay’s collection guidance says to select collection in person and pay through checkout. Payment at collection is allowed only in limited categories such as vehicles; an ordinary furniture purchase should not be diverted to cash or a bank transfer on that basis.[1]

Personal collection and your own courier carry different conditions

Checked on 11 September 2026, eBay UK’s detailed Money Back Guarantee policy lists third-party collection and buyer-arranged delivery as not covered in both the non-receipt and not-as-described exclusions. Read those sections before sending a friend, family member or separately booked courier. Operational permission to nominate a collector does not erase a protection exclusion.[2]

Compare three real arrangements: collect personally, accept a seller-arranged delivery offered in the order, or book your own carrier with its own terms. Do not assume any arrangement guarantees a refund. If protection is decisive, ask eBay about the exact proposed transaction before purchase.

For your own carrier, establish inspection, packing, handling and damage responsibilities in writing. A carrier’s record may help with a claim under its contract, but it does not restore excluded platform coverage. Keep that distinction when deciding whether the cheaper route is worthwhile.

The code comes after the inspection

Bring the order details and compare the actual furniture with the listing. Check the back, accessible underside, drawers, moving parts and every included loose component without forcing or dismantling it. Pay particular attention to defects discussed in messages and any new difference.

Agreement precedes inspection, and inspection precedes giving the collection code at handover.
The code records collection, not an appointment. Check the linked policy separately when someone else collects or you arrange your own delivery; the sequence does not guarantee coverage.

eBay provides a QR code and a six-digit collection code. Its guidance says to provide the code only when satisfied with the item; the seller’s scan or entry records collection. Do not send it ahead merely to make an appointment or because a carrier wants paperwork completed early.[1]

If a material mismatch appears, explain it, photograph it with permission and record the issue in eBay messages before accepting the handover. Use the order’s resolution process. Do not convert a defect dispute into an undocumented cash adjustment or assume that withholding a code alone cancels the contract.

Record the condition before transport changes it

Once the transaction is ready to complete, keep a short set of condition photographs and an inventory of loose parts. Agree which components travel separately and have the people doing the move determine sound handling points. The seller’s hallway is a poor place to discover that nobody has brought appropriate packing.

Message before purchase

Could we agree time to inspect the furniture against the listing before collection is confirmed? Please describe access, all included parts and any help or packing you provide. I plan to [collect personally / use the following arrangement] and will confirm the relevant eBay and transport terms before buying.

If a problem emerges after collection, report it promptly through the order and follow the applicable deadlines. Keep statutory rights, the seller’s terms, platform protection and the carrier contract distinct. Clear arrangements are most useful before the object leaves the seller.
