The familiar outline comes in different versions

Artemide’s Tizio material describes Richard Sapper’s counterbalanced design and its development into a family including 35, Micro and LED versions. The angular silhouette links them, but it does not make the dimensions, lamp head or electrical components interchangeable. Ask for a readable photograph of the base information and the complete lamp.[1]

Compare the identified version with the manufacturer’s documentation. Record its overall size, head, base, switches and any accessories. If the seller calls it simply “the small one”, resolve the model before paying for a part advertised as a generic Tizio replacement. Old purchase paperwork or a repair invoice can help connect the pieces.

Choose the size for the work, too. Put the base where it will actually live and check whether the head reaches your notebook without occupying the place where your arm moves. A technically complete miniature lamp can still be too small for your desk.

Watch it remain in a normal working position

Have the seller demonstrate normal adjustment with the lamp in a suitable, stable position. Look at the whole arm arrangement and counterweights. Does the head stay where it is placed, or does an arm sink, twist or require an improvised prop? Record that behaviour instead of prescribing a screw adjustment remotely.

Check for missing weights, distorted arms, cracked components and unfamiliar repairs. Do not add extra weights or overtighten joints to make a questionable example hold position. A repairer needs to know which component has failed and whether the rest of the assembly remains suitable.

DemonstrationWhat it establishes—and what it does not
Normal movement and balanceShows the observed mechanical behaviour; does not establish electrical readiness.
A service record and appropriate electrical assessmentAddresses the identified electrical assembly; does not replace a mechanical inspection.
A photograph with the bulb litShows that it illuminated at that moment; leaves both hidden electrical condition and long-term movement unresolved.

Low voltage at the head is not the whole lamp

Desk plan shows a lamp base, a notebook area and space behind the lamp pivot.
Watch the complete Tizio assembly in its normal working positions. Space for the counterweights and arms matters as well as the head reaching your notebook.

Artemide describes the arms of the original concept as both supports and conductors supplying the low-voltage light source. That unusual arrangement is a reason to use the right service expertise. It does not make every part of the appliance safe to open or convert at home, and it does not remove the need to identify the mains specification at the base.[1]

A lamp bought in another market may have a different supply specification. Have a qualified repairer confirm suitability for your home and the correct light source for that exact version. Do not bridge contacts, bypass a component or assume that changing the plug settles the question.

If it does not light, “probably just a bulb” is a seller’s guess until the fault is established. Keep the purchase price conditional on an assessed repair scope, or accept the lamp explicitly as a project with an unresolved total.

Price the finished desk lamp

Ask for the cost of identified parts, labour and the final checks together. A replacement head, base component or arm assembly can change the economics more than ordinary cosmetic wear. Confirm that the proposed replacement suits the version and that the repairer is willing to work on the existing assembly.

In an illustrative comparison, lamp A has worn paint but holds its position and has a recent service record. Lamp B is visually cleaner but drifts down and does not light. B does not become the cheaper choice merely because its asking price is lower. Give each unresolved fault a place in the comparison.

If a particular old finish is what attracts you, discuss preservation before agreeing a full cosmetic restoration. A working lamp does not have to look newly manufactured to be a pleasure on the desk.

Here are the base label, whole lamp, head and arm photographs. Please identify the Tizio version and confirm the supply and light-source specification. The observed fault is [describe it]. Can you separate any balance or joint repair from electrical work and confirm compatible parts before quoting the completed lamp?

Choose the Tizio that reaches the work and stays there, with its version and repair history understood. That is the everyday satisfaction behind the striking outline.
