Buying a second-hand sofa-bed

Decide how often someone will sleep on it

A spare bed for a visitor and your everyday bed deserve different trials. For occasional use, you may accept a firm surface and the daily task of moving a coffee table. For nightly use, think about where the bedding goes, whether you can operate the conversion comfortably and whether you still like sitting on the sofa once the bed is folded away.

Ask when it was last used as a bed. “We only ever sat on it” tells you something about its history, but nothing about the current operation. A seller who can demonstrate both uses gives you a much better starting point.

Find out what actually makes the sleeping surface

IKEA sells a NYHAMN mattress specifically for the NYHAMN sofa-bed. That is a useful example of why “double mattress” is not a compatibility check. Identify your own sofa-bed and consult its instructions before ordering a replacement.^[1]

Record the mattress length, width and thickness, plus any labels. A thick domestic mattress may not fold or close in a mechanism designed for something else. Do not use a topper or extra bedding inside the folded unit unless the instructions permit it.

Watch it open, settle and close

Ask the seller to operate the empty sofa-bed using its usual controls and documented method. Keep hands out of joints and moving linkages, and keep children and pets clear. You need to see the whole sequence, including how the legs or platform reach their final position.

Look for a section that drops unexpectedly, a support that fails to reach its position, a twisted frame or fabric caught in the mechanism. A little operating noise is an observation; it is not a diagnosis of a particular broken part. Stop a demonstration that needs forcing or improvised support.

A video is useful before travelling. At a viewing, if the seller has shown normal operation and there is no unresolved defect, try sitting and lying in the intended positions. Notice the middle join, support beneath your hips and whether getting up feels awkward. Do not bounce on it to test strength.

Measure the night-time room

Take the maximum width and depth in sofa form, then the maximum footprint with the bed ready for use. Include the space needed while it unfolds: a frame may travel through an area it does not occupy at rest.

Mark the open footprint on your floor with paper or a tape measure. Rehearse the route from the bed to the door and decide where displaced furniture will go. A bed that technically fits can still block the only useful passage.

For example, a coffee table may fit comfortably in front of the sofa but have nowhere to stand overnight. Make that decision now, rather than expecting guests to climb around it. Measure the delivery route separately; a removable mattress does not make the sofa frame small.

Allow for the mattress, condition and move

Ask to see both sides of an accessible mattress and the seat area without loose cushions. Discuss stains, odours, pets, storage and previous cleaning. Fading or a worn cushion cover may be a tolerable trade-off. A replacement mattress, specialist mechanism repair and a difficult collection are separate costs. Confirm that any needed part can actually be supplied for this model before treating a low asking price as a bargain.

Send one request before booking collection

Buy when the bed works for the person who will use it, the supplied parts make sense and the room and moving plan are realistic. If the mechanism or mattress remains an expensive unknown, settle that question before paying.
